The SHE (Self Help and Empowerment) programme was started by us in 2006 after seeing first hand the needs in Phuket. SHE works with women and children marginalised and at risk with the majority working in the bars of Patong.
Thousands of young girls are being bought and sold today in Thailand’s dark and ever growing sex industry. Many tourists select these girls on arrival, and some are even bought beforehand as part of a holiday package. One bar owner in Phuket’s most notorious red light district of Patong Beach, commented that “ It is no different to buying a T-Shirt; the transaction is just the same. You know what you want, you look around for the size and style you like, then you hand over the money and take your goods.”
Many of these young women travel to Patong from the poorer rural areas of Thailand to seek employment to provide income for their families. By visiting Patong’s busy bars, we build relationships and most of the girls we have met are looking for a way out but have no other choices. SHE is meeting this need by providing vocational training and employment in Jewellery making. This way they can escape the sex trade and still provide for their families back home.
